The collection includes correspondence, background material, and research papers (prepared by various individuals) gathered by the Special Committee on Campus Tensions, largely in 1969. Some of these materials were used as a basis for two publications of the American Council on Education: Perspectives on Campus Tension, and Campus Tensions: Analysis and Recommendations. Also included are the files of Todd Furniss relating to Black Studies in the United States (largely dated 1969).

Warren Todd Furniss was born in Pelham, New York, on June 5, 1921. He attended Phillips Academy, Andover, and received his B.A. from Yale in 1942. After graduation Furniss entered the U.S. Army Air Force, serving chiefly in the Medical Administrative Corps in Guam until 1946. Following the war, Furniss returned to Yale and received a M.A. (1948) and a Ph.D. (1952). He was an instructor at Mount Holyoke College; an instructor, associate professor, and associate dean at Ohio State University; and ...
